Analysis of oral health practices in the School Health Program in a municipality with high social vulnerability in São Paulo State
Abstract
This study analyzed oral health actions carried out through the School Health Program, aimed at students in the public education network of a socially vulnerable municipality in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Semi-structured interviews, subjected to content analysis, were conducted, along with two questionnaires applied to oral health and education professionals, analyzed through calculation of absolute frequencies. The main actions identified were clinical examination, distribution of oral hygiene kits, supervised oral hygiene instruction, and referral for dental care. These actions are carried out annually by dentists, oral health assistants, nurses, and community health workers. The target population consists of children aged 0 to 10 years, enrolled in early childhood education and primary school. Professionals highlighted the relevance of the program in implementing health promotion and prevention practices. The main challenges reported were the lack of consolidated articulation between the health and education sectors, as well as shortages of financial, material, and human resources. As facilitators, they highlighted the students receptiveness and the commitment of the professionals involved. It is suggested that strengthening intersectoral collaboration, including state schools, and expanding the scope and frequency of actions are fundamental to promoting oral health and reducing inequalities.
