Abstract

Effective communication is characterized as one of the most important international goals in the work of the multidisciplinary health team and contributes to the prevention of failures and adverse effects in patient care, being understood as one of the determinants of the quality of patient safety. The experience of humanized practices in this context contributes to improving the patient's health conditions. From this focus, the proposal of the work presented here is to discuss the importance of communication in interprofessional work in health care and patient safety, highlighting the understanding of the individuality of the different contexts in which professionals, patients and their families find themselves inserted. For this, a secondary integrative review study was carried out, through a search in databases and data sources, where 3902 articles were found, 22 articles were selected for full text analysis and 15 classifieds for this review with studies published among the periods from 2000 to 2021. The results found point to evidence that clearly links professional-patient communication to patient satisfaction, treatment adherence and health outcomes. These results allow us to conclude that effective communication is a fundamental factor in ensuring patient safety, in addition to being directly associated with satisfaction, which makes it a sign of quality.
