The exercise of humanization and care for the homeless person: an experience report
Abstract
Introduction: The numerical expansion in which the homeless population has suffered over the years is increasingly evident in urban centers. Consequently, this population gradually worsens in access to health and basic rights, being increasingly marginalized and placed in a position of extreme vulnerability. Thus, the unpreparedness of health professionals regarding this population causes even more increase in the prejudice experienced by these people, highlighted by the absence of a human, empathic and dignified medical care. Objective: To describe the realization of the extension activity “Doar é POP!”, promoted by the Academic League of Population in Vulnerable Situation’s Health. Methodology: Discussions, visits and collection of supplies were held at the Centro POP in Ribeirão Preto - SP, which started 02/05/2022 and ended 10/06/2022. Results: The extension activity promoted the development of knowledge aimed at the homeless population by students of the medical course at Centro Universitário Barão de Mauá, and the collecting of hygiene products and clothes for donation to the Centro POP. Conclusion: The activity provided participants with an experience that aroused empathy to homeless people and a commitment to health actions aimed at this population.
